THINK TWICE ADVOCACY PROGRAM

Our advocates help students and families face school challenges that interfere with student learning, such as procedural and communication issues related to learning and lifestyle differences. We assist families throughout the process to build their confidence.

MEET OUR FOUNDER & CEO

Founder and CEO Yvette Burtworthington holds a BA in Special Education from the University of DC, 2004, a MA in Curriculum, Instruction, and Design from Loyola University, 2013, and is pursuing a Ph.D. in public health from Walden University. She is a certified special education teacher. Her knowledge, experience, and compassion as a leader in education, designer of curriculum and instruction, and an expert in biopsychosocial health assessment aligns with the mission to improve the quality of life for youth and families through education and advocacy.

Ms. Yvette has taught and advocated for many families. While working as a full-time teacher and an after-school private tutor in MD, she listened to several families express their concerns and frustrations about their child's school struggles. Yvette began working with English and non-English-speaking parents to help them get additional resources for their children. She helped immigrant families navigate school districts to get their children the needed resources. She understands how important it is for households to promptly get school-related information to parents. She taught them about their child's right to free appropriate education (FAPE) and how to exercise that right. Ms. Burtworthington also knows the importance of reviewing important dates and agenda items with families. Parents need time to review and prepare for school meetings to make informed decisions. Hence, in 2008, tutoring and advocacy became the combined priority.

For 20 years, Ms. Yvette has taught students math, science, English, and social studies in various settings in elementary through twelfth grade. She also has years of experience in curriculum writing for adults in GED preparation and interpersonal skill development. Her primary goal is to teach her clients to become better students and more familiar with the school process.

She trains teachers and tutors to reinforce fundamental reading, writing, math skills, and mindfulness practices within every lesson as determined by student needs. Her organization differentiates instruction for students with unique learning styles and significant gaps in knowledge to have an authentic personalized learning experience. TTLS uses parent and student feedback to tailor student instruction. Yvette encourages students best by celebrating small accomplishments and empowers students by teaching them to self-advocate respectfully and appropriately in the classroom.
